Team & Careers
Senior-led geoscience practice rooted in BC terrain.
Third Rock Geoscience is a small, field-driven team providing terrain stability and karst expertise to resource operations across British Columbia.
Our work is technical, practical, and grounded in real-world decision-making. We operate in steep terrain, remote access environments, and complex limestone systems where judgment matters.
This is not high-volume consulting. It is focused, accountable geoscience.
Our Team
Patrick Haesevoets is the Owner and President of Third Rock Geoscience Inc. After earning a
Bachelor of Science degree in Geomorphology and Geology from the University of Victoria,
Patrick began his geoscience career working alongside industry-leading professionals
throughout Vancouver Island and Coastal British Columbia.
In 2009, Patrick founded Third Rock Geoscience Inc., building on his extensive experience and
commitment to delivering high-quality geoscience services. With more than 30 years of
experience, Patrick has completed terrain hazard assessments, forestry road construction, and
road deactivation projects throughout Vancouver Island and Coastal BC. His deep
understanding of the region’s geology, combined with decades of field experience, has
established him as a trusted and respected professional in the industry.
Patrick’s passion for the outdoors remains as strong as ever, and he values every opportunity to
work in the remote and rugged landscapes of British Columbia. When he is not in the field, he
can often be found cycling, riding his motorcycle, or spending time in his workshop restoring his
vintage VW.
Melissa specializes in karst field assessments, terrain stability, and sediment delivery evaluations for clients across Vancouver Island and British Columbia. With more than 14 years of applied experience, she brings a geomorphology-driven, field-focused approach to complex and sensitive landscapes.
Melissa has extensive experience in coastal, glaciated, and karst terrain, and she leads karst assessments that support operational planning in sensitive carbonate systems. She also teaches geomorphology, soils, and hydrology at several post secondary institutions, supporting students as they build skills in these fields and develop confidence working with real-world terrain. She complements this work with experience in terrestrial ecosystem mapping and applied geophysics, using these tools where appropriate to strengthen terrain, subsurface, and ecosystem understanding.
Her karst and terrain experience includes:
She is currently completing a Master of Science in Environmental Practice and a diploma in Ecological Restoration, integrating applied geoscience with broader environmental planning and restoration principles. Her work brings defensible field methods, clear communication, and responsible land management together with a strong commitment to environmental and ecosystem management across forestry and geoscience practice.
Dave Bergman has over 30 years of experience in the forest industry, ranging from tree-planting and layout engineering in the 1990s to working as a terrain specialist since 2000. He has been a registered Professional Geoscientist since 2004. Dave’s current areas of practice include worksite and natural hazard assessment, slope stability assessment and road construction assessment as it relates to terrain conditions and hazards. On his days off Dave enjoys sampling trendy beers and exploring Vancouver Island by biking, skiing, mountain climbing and sometimes hiking with his wife and dog.
David attained his BSc. 1986 specialization in Geology from the University of Alberta and briefly started in mineral exploration before joining the BC Geological Survey Branch as a research geoscientist, working alongside world renowned geologists specializing in a variety of geoscience areas.
He began his long tenured career as a terrain specialist in 1995 providing services to the forestry and the environmental assessment sectors in all areas of British Columbia, the Yukon and in the states of Arizona and Utah. He has worked as a staff member for a large forestry licensee gaining valuable experience in the “ins and outs” of the entire process of what it takes to get trees out of the forest in addition to providing numerous guidelines for their day-to-day operations. He enjoys working with corporate and provincial lawyers as well as numerous forestry professionals. A side passion is transferring knowledge by being a guest lecturer at a number of colleges and universities on various topics including risk management, road deactivation and the practical use of LiDAR.
He continues to be a general practice reviewer with EGBC and was a long member (9 years) of EGBC’s Professional Practice committee (now an advisory group). He also was a member of a number of committees that involved the registration of corporations and quality management certification.
In his spare time, he enjoys spending time with his two Belgian Malinois pups (Tater and Gater).
